Mold Remediation

I've got mold in my house. How do I clean that up? A common question it is, with equally common answers. We bring you some tips for safe and effective ways to cleanup the mold from your house of mold. From allergic reactions to severe respiratory problems, molds cause a lot of diseases.

Everything from wood, paper, foods, carpet and insulation to buildings and building materials can become dwelling places of mold. Just a sufficient amount of moisture, causes mold to grow rapidly.

Moisture problems are the root cause of mold contamination. The following tips will help you solve moisture problems.

Prevention Tips

  • Fix the water leaks like leaky plumbing immediately.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Ensure that HVAC drip pans are clean flowing.
  • Keep indoor humidity below 60% (RH)
  • Do not leave wet or damp spots un cleaned for long.

Hidden Mold

Mold contamination is not always visible. It may be at hidden places like the back side of wall paper etc. Moldy smell helps in finding hidden molds. Cleaning hidden mold needs extra care and skill.

Mold Remediation Plan

The actual process of mold remediation depends on the type of mold and the extent of its contamination. Remediation plan should be such that it is effective at the same time safe to remediators as well.

Mold Remediation Process

Actual mold remediation process involves the following tasks.

  • Fix water and humidity problems
  • Alter maintenance and remediation plans as required.
  • Adhere to suitable drying and cleaning methods.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be used.

Cleanup Methods

Different kinds of mold cleanup methods are available. Here are some listed for you.

  • Wet Vacuum: Vacuum cleaner that collects water is called wet vacuum. This is used to remove water from carpets and floor.
  • Damp Wipe: Wiping and scrubbing with water and detergent removes molds. Surface should be dried immediately after cleaning.
  • HEPA Vacuum: HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuums are used finally after the contaminants are removed and the surface is dried. PPE should be used when changing vacuum filters. Contaminated contents of HEPA vacuum should be disposed of in sealed plastic bags.
  • Discard: Sometimes the mold contamination may be extensive and not salvageable. In such situations the contaminated materials and furnishings should be discarded after packing them in sealed bags.

While doing mold clean up gloves and eye protection should be used without fail.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

To avoid breathing in mold spores that might become airborne cleaning PPE should be used. PPE also secures skin and eyes from mold contact.

Containment

Containment is necessary to safeguard remediators and building occupants from mold and to restrict the release of mold into air and surroundings. There are two kinds of containment-limited and full.

Limited Containment

For areas less than 100 square feet, limited containment is the ideal method. In this fire retardant polyethylene sheeting is used to cover up the contaminated area. All the openings like doors, chases, risers, air vents and supply vents are also sealed with polyethylene sheeting. The covered area should be at negative pressure relative to the surroundings.

Full Containment

For larger areas greater than 100 square feet full containment is recommended. Here double layers of polyethylene sheeting are used. An airlock or a decontamination chamber is constructed. Outside this chamber the remediators should wear respirators. PPE should be worn throughout the mold remediation process.

As mold loves water proper drainage and absence of water leaks help preventing mold growth.
